Messika Terres de Contrastes: High Jewelry around Botswana’s Largest Blue Diamond

Messika built its name on white diamonds. With Terres de Contrastes, the Paris house lets colour take over, and it sets the largest blue diamond ever found in Botswana into a necklace for the first time.

Messika has been making high jewelry since its first collection was presented in Basel in 2013, and for most of that time the story was white diamonds. Terres de Contrastes, unveiled in July 2026 and extended in October by a second chapter and a high jewelry show at the Grand Palais in Paris, is where that changes. The collection flies over Botswana: the red and ochre of the Kalahari Desert, the deep blues and greens of the Okavango Delta and the white Makgadikgadi salt pans under a rose and violet dusk.

Its predecessor, Terres d’Instinct, the 2025 high jewelry tribute to Southern Africa, first brought colour into Messika’s diamond world on a journey from the dunes of Namibia to the grasslands of Botswana. Terres de Contrastes takes the idea further. In Messika’s words, colour is now fully part of the house’s design language.

Okavango Blue: a historic stone

The centrepiece is the Okavango Blue necklace, the result of a partnership between Messika and the Government of Botswana. Its blue diamond was found in 2018 at the Orapa mine and is the largest and rarest blue diamond ever to come out of Botswana: 41.11 carats as a rough stone, 20.46 carats after polishing, graded Fancy Deep Blue. Valérie Messika is the first to set it into jewelry.

The theme is the Okavango itself, a river that never reaches the sea. It crosses thousands of kilometres of Southern Africa and then fans out into the Kalahari as a delta of channels, floating islands and deep blue lagoons.

An emerald, a black opal and a rubellite

Delta Sacré draws the delta as a map. More than 600 diamonds in marquise, brilliant, pear and oval cuts, each chosen to set off the next, form a mosaic across the necklace, and a pear-shaped emerald of 12.81 carats hangs from it like an island.

Féroce is the crocodile of the Okavango, translated into sharp triangular volumes that trace a row of teeth. At its centre sits a 16.98-carat Australian black opal whose colour shifts between night blue, water green and electric neon, framed by mirror-polished gold and pavé diamonds.

Python Rubellite belongs to the salt pans. Messika reworks the classic diamond rivière into five rows of marquise-cut diamonds that follow the body of a snake, with a 13.54-carat oval rubellite at the centre. The necklace is engineered to be extremely flexible, so it lies on the collarbone like a second skin.

Our view

Terres de Contrastes is a fine lesson in coloured stones, because every centre stone behaves differently. Blue diamonds owe their colour to traces of boron, and Fancy Deep describes a dark, strongly saturated blue rather than a light one. Emerald and rubellite, a pink to red tourmaline, are judged by colour before anything else; our guide to ruby, sapphire and emerald explains how.

The black opal deserves a word about care. Opal is far softer than diamond, between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and it contains water, which is why a necklace is the kindest setting for it. If an opal ever lands in your jewelry box, read our opal profile and the guide to hardness and everyday wear before you clean it.
