How precious metal prices are made

Gold, silver, platinum and palladium trade around the clock on exchanges and between banks. The spot price is the price for immediate delivery of pure metal in large bars; it is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and converted into other currencies at the exchange rate of the moment. Every other price in the trade is built on it: coin premiums above it, scrap offers below it, jewelry far above it.

Gold moves with real interest rates, the dollar and demand from central banks and investors. Silver follows gold but is more volatile and half industrial. Platinum and palladium are driven by car catalysts, which is why palladium rose far above platinum for several years and then fell back. None of them pays interest; all of them are the world’s oldest insurance policy.

Questions about the prices

Where do the prices come from?

From public market data for spot gold, silver, platinum and palladium in US dollars, converted with the latest ECB reference rates for EUR, GBP and CHF. Our server fetches and caches them; your browser only talks to our domain.

Why does my jeweler quote a different price?

Spot is the wholesale market price for pure metal. Buyers pay a percentage below it, sellers of coins and bars charge a premium above it, and jewelry prices include design and labour that have nothing to do with the metal.

What is a troy ounce?

31.1035 grams, the unit precious metals are traded in. An ordinary ounce is 28.35 grams. The gram prices here are already converted.

How often do the prices update?

Every fifteen minutes during trading hours. If the source is unreachable, the last known prices are shown and marked as reference values.
